Carrboro, NC — We had a wonderful visit with the children in our collaborative Farm to Community Afterschool program Farm to TABLE at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market on October 19, 2011. The Chapel Hill News also just published a story about the collaboration, “Sharing the load.”
Thirty food insecure children, who’ve been getting gleaned and purchased food as part of the program since the summer of 2010, came to market to meet the farmers who have been providing donated and purchased food to them. The field trip was designed to help the children learn how to plan meals, then shop the market and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation provided the financial support to TABLE and Farmer Foodshare to make the program happen. You can see those BCBSNC Foundation funds being put to good use in the kids’ hands!
The children were given $5 per child and got to choose whatever they wanted. The only stipulation was they had to buy at least ONE vegetable before they could get a cookie or a hot dog. (We have delicious locally made hot dogs at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market.) The volunteers and farmers were impressed by how the kids knew what they wanted, whether it was coriander, spinach, broccoli, cucumbers or tomatoes… these kids knew their veggies!
